Jack Welch once was quoted as saying …
”Face Reality as it is, not what it was or what you wish it to be”.

Once the late Welch was the CEO of a large engineering conglomerate General Electric (GE) a leader in his own righteousness turned GE around to be a profitable organization with great success.  Thus, in any organizations especially where the base is engineering, the leader faces a different kind of challenges.  The leader must match his capability in handling the business, human relations management, engineering management, financial management and a host of other things.  Some say there is not one leadership style that fits all, but at the same time leadership is not a subject that can be taught in class.

If leadership cannot be taught then how can leadership be learned? It can be developed and through exposure and learning by observation and picking up as you go along.  Leadership cannot be developed in one day or one week but one does pick up some leadership skills as one progresses through the time and hierarchy of development.  The sooner one embraces the good leadership qualities, the better for the person and the organization. As a start there are some fundamental skills of leadership that may be used as a baseline. After that, its all up to individuals how far you wish to go. When does one knows that he has attained a competent leadership baseline? And this is the point that is not easy to identify. It is felt not identified.

The speaker, once held a Director General position in a major government defense sector, a Chief Executive Officer of an engineering company developing re-manufacturing as an engineering service provided to clients that requires them, a group Executive Chairman of three engineering related companies, shall speak of his experiences on the qualities and skill sets a leader should have and the challenges that are faced by current CEOs and he shall use the current much talked about "Littoral Combat Ship"issue as a backdrop.
