SYNOPSIS

Since the implementation of the Occupational Safety and Health (Noise Exposure) Regulations 2019, which replaced the previous Factory and Machinery (Noise Exposure) Regulations 1989, there has been a need to develop a noise control measure based on an engineering concept approach. However, most of the recommended control measures in the noise risk assessment report still refer to administration and personal hearing protection to keep noise levels below 85 dB(A). Employers face uncertain problem solving and budgetary constraints due to a lack of understanding of the fundamental physics of sound and acoustics. The field of noise engineering control solutions does not only deal with occupational health that induces hearing loss problems among workers but also gives an indication that something abnormal happens during machine or equipment operation.

The interdisciplinary knowledge background of mechanical engineers and industrial hygienists is important to anticipate and, as far as is practicable, solve problems related to noisy process descriptions. An engineer involved as a safety and health committee member may be called to provide a solution to managing noise through engineering concepts at the workplace. This talk will give an in-depth overview for engineers and occupational safety & health practitioners about regulation requirements that it is practicable to reduce excessive noise by engineering control. In addition, 10 Zero Noise Control Solutions using engineering techniques will be highlighted.

BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Dr. Ts. Nor Azali Azmir

Nor Azali Azmir is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). He graduated from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with a B. Eng in Mechanical Engineering (2009), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia with an M. Eng in Mechanical Engineering (2012) and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia with a PhD in Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering (2016). Currently, he is a registered noise risk assessor with the Department of Occupational Safety & Health. Actively doing consultation work related to monitoring noise exposure and noise risk assessment for many types of industry, such as oil & gas, palm oil, automotives, small medium enterprise, etc. He is also one of the noise risk assessor course trainers for NIOSH Malaysia.
