SYNOPSIS

The International Electrotechnical Commision (IEC) authors international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. The standards collection addresses product development, performance, compatibility and related topics in order to ensure product compatibility and environmental safety.
Countries are becoming increasingly interdependent. Products are manufactured, assembled and sold in countries that span the globe. Harmonised, globally agreed technical standards ensure that components are able to work together correctly so that the final product is safe and functional for the end-users and reducing barriers to trade.

BIODATA OF SPEAKER

As the Senior Director of Standardisation Division, Mr. Mizzar is the next in line to the Director General in charge of managing the department as the National Standards Body. Prior to the current position, he was the Director of Accreditation, entrusted to plan, develop, promote and manage all accreditation activities of Standards Malaysia. Graduated from University Teknologi Malaysia, UTM in Chemical Engineering in 1997, Mr. Mizzar had already assumed top management posts in Standards Malaysia and was also the Director of Strategic Planning Division previously, responsible for the development and implementation of strategic policies. This includes policies on standardisation and accreditation; trade facilitation; external relations and cooperation; and information and communications.

Mr. Dennis Chew heads the IEC Asia-Pacific Regional Centre which has two key objectives of supporting the IEC community in the Asia and Asia-Pacific region and management support to IEC Technical Committees/Subcommittees. He was the first Technical Officer located in the region to provide project and process management support to the IEC Technical Committees (TCs) and Subcommittees (SCs) when this function was added to the IEC-APRC in 2005. The team at IEC-APRC has since expanded and currently supports more than 70 IEC Technical Committees and Subcommittees and its Technical Officers serve as the Secretary to the IEC SMB’s Advisory Committee on Electricity Transmission and Distribution and the Advisory Committee on Energy Efficiency. Over the past 20 years, Dennis has been actively involved in international and regional standardization and related activities. He represents IEC in numerous regional fora, meetings and seminars to promote and encourage the use and acceptance of IEC international standards and conformity assessment systems as win-win solutions by industry and government bodies. In addition, he is very much involved in the training of experts on the IEC standards development process to support their participation in developing IEC International Standards.
