SYNOPSIS
This webinar introduces the important concept of flood risk. It begins with an introduction to probability in the field of hydrology/flooding. The idea of flood hazard is later showcased. By combining probability and flood hazard, the concept of flood risk is then explained. The webinar also introduces practical software in tackling the issue of flood risk. Finally, example applications of flood risk in assessing asset management and flood mitigation schemes are shown.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Ken Vui Chua is a civil engineer with background in hydraulics and programming. Ken’s PhD focused on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling of turbulent flow around bridges. Development of the in-house CFD model required Ken to learn about programming, 3D hydraulics modelling and various post-processing tools to analyze and visualize turbulent flow. Novelty of his work had been proven through multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals. Ken worked as a scientist in a water consultancy firm in the UK for a year after he graduated and had gained experience in hydrological, hydraulic and water quality modelling in river catchments. It was then when Ken picked up the Python programming skill which allowed him to develop a machine learning tool to predict algal bloom in UK reservoirs. Ken carries on expanding his knowledge in catchment modelling through the learning of Infoworks ICM and ICMLive. The National Flood Forecast and Warning System (NaFFWS) project in HR Wallingford has given Ken the opportunity to work on live forecasting system which requires him to configure the integration amongst importing live gauge data, running the model, and exporting the results based on client’s requirement. Apart from that, Ken is involved in the development of accuracy calculation script for ICM model results and system stability script for the NaFFWS system.
