SYNOPSIS
Managing even a small specialized services or product company can be a tedious, time consuming and a problematic situation. This is even more so with the COVID pandemic, changing business technologies, fluctuating international politics, inconsistent supply/demand forces etc. So how do we know, what are the actual internal and external factors that affects the company deliverables at the end of the day?
The distinction between the fixed and variable operational parameters are supported by the parametric measurements from the lower levels of company. These lower level measurements are made up of large amount of data generated by the company operations on a daily basis.
It is this BIG DATA that has to be sorted, analysed, synergized and calculated so that the complex, tedious and almost ‘black box’ company operations can be understood by the ‘outside in’ board decision makers operationally, logically, being geographically distant and unemotional about the ‘life forces’ within the company.
How many BoDs know the difference between metrics, performance indices, objectives and key results (OKR), balanced score card (BSC) and KPIs? Let alone, know on how, what, when and why a corporate measurement should be taken in the first place.
As the saying goes “if I’m not measured, therefore I cannot fail. Hence, I cannot be blamed and hence, by logic, I’m perfect! ” It is this fallacy that drives corporate decision makers to take (uninformed) decisions which, gives rise to a whole host of unnecessary issues. The other contributor is that, on the occurrence of an adverse event, a ‘substitute’, irrelevant, or ‘convenient’ truth is told, to logically accept the illogical excuses. If the exact and/or specific operational area or areas cannot be rectified, then the problem remains ‘out of sight, out of mind’, only to strike again with higher repercussions. This talk will clarify all the relevant concepts and solutions for the above and more.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER Ir. Ts. S. Vignaeswaran has had more than 35 years of working experience in the electrical, computer, IT, SCADA, project management and tendering fields. He has been involved in state-of-the-art applications that includes cyber-security from the 1990s. He has an Electrical Engineering degree from Monash University (Clayton, Australia) and MSc in IT/BIS from University of Keele, UK. He continues to publish international papers in Engineering, IT, Computer Security and the Project Management fields.
He has carried out Malaysian National Security projects and has been Client’s HOD (Electrical & Automation) in a large-scale Saudi Arabian project of RM 8 billion in value. Additionally, he has worked in international automation a project that incorporates cyber security concerns, which inevitably requires considerable business process re-engineering (BPR) from the pre-COVID to the post-COVID era of doing business.
