SYNOPSIS
Reinforced plastic materials are now widely used in commercial aircrafts such as the fuselage of 787 and A350, automobiles such as the chassis of BMW i6, clean energy production such as blades for wind turbine, buildings etc... How/why did it happen? Is it environmentally sustainable? What is the future of reinforced plastic? This talk will briefly address these questions and implications for humanity’s future.
BIODATA OF SPEAKER
Assoc. Professor Dr. Goh Kheng Lim (FIMechE, CEng, CPhys) research interest lies in fibre reinforced composites, with a focus on basic understanding of the physical properties and implications for sustainability. He holds the position of Reader in Mechanics of Composite Materials at Newcastle University in Singapore. He is the author of the book: 'Discontinuous-fibre reinforced composites: fundamentals of stress transfer and fracture mechanics'.
