SYNOPSIS

Urbanization and rapid population growth have generated large amounts of waste and pollution, including from domestic, industrial, commercial and transportation wastes that will end up in rivers which can cause flood. To make it worse, human intervention for flood mitigation by concreting all the banks and the bottom of these rivers as the hard-engineering solution has become the major cause of the insufficient water in rivers phenomenon which contributes to deficiency of clean water supply for the population.

River restoration involves restoring the river to its natural state. Not only it improves the quality of river water for our usage, but it also benefits the quality of the ecosystem and reduce flood events.

In this Talk session, the speaker will discuss the characteristics of a good river and how engineers can play their role in river restoration for the sake of the future generation.


BIODATA OF SPEAKER

Ir. Dr. Salmaliza Salleh received her PhD in Engineering from University of Malaya in 2018, Masters in Project Management from National University of Singapore in 2007 and Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Universiti Teknologi MARA in 2004. She was a lecturer in the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA for more than 5 years before attached to SEGi University in 2009. Now she is the Lead Civil and Structural Engineer at MTC Engineering Consultancy Sdn. Bhd., handling various Civil and Structural Engineering Consultation projects. She is also the Head of Research Consultant for ‘Roadmap Study of the Selangor State Rivers Restoration and Development’, initiated by Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS).
