SYNOPSIS
Overview
Concrete is susceptible to cracks mainly due to drying shrinkage, restraints and temperature changes, joints have to open up as the concrete dries, expand and contract in response to the temperature change. Therefore, to avoid random cracks, joints are needed to relieve the stresses.
Joints may be costly to build and maintain but it is the only way to control random cracks. Cracks cannot be prevented but it can only be mitigated and controlled with the appropriate joint design.
Objective
- To present the different types of joints and where they are needed. - To understand the various type of joints and its uses. - To learn the distresses caused by improper joints.
SPEAKER
Dr. ZACK LIM E.H.
Zack Lim earned his bachelor degree as an engineer from The City University(London) in year 1981. In year 2000, Zacklim Flat Floor Specialist was incorporated to venture into specializing in the construction of super flat floors which Asia lacks and later having achieved building floors of world class standards. Over 33 years in construction, he has amassed great experience in construction and gain recognition after having constructed many signature industrial flooring jobs in Asia. He has been actively involved in sharing his experience and knowledge with and advising young engineers, contractorsand extolling the virtues of best practices on construction of concrete floors.
He was the Past President of American Concrete Institute (ACI) Malaysia Chapter and set up “Academy of Concrete Technology” to organize practical seminars, networking sessions to develop the standard of concrete construction with objective to foster regional integration for the concrete and construction fraternity and to promote excellence in the industry through pooling of information and sharing of knowledge and practical experience not only in Malaysia but Asia.
