SYNOPSIS

Overview

Concrete is susceptible to cracks mainly due to drying shrinkage, restraints and temperature changes, joints have to open up as the concrete dries, expand and contract in response to the temperature change. Therefore, to avoid random cracks, joints are needed to relieve the stresses.

Joints may be costly to build and maintain but it is the only way to control random cracks. Cracks cannot be prevented but it can only be mitigated and controlled with the appropriate joint design.

Objective

- To present the different types of joints and where they are needed.
- To understand the various type of joints and its uses.
- To learn the distresses caused by improper joints.
